Black+Decker BDERO100 for Woodworking Beginners?

Started by turnhail on June 22, 2024

I'm new to woodworking and I was wondering if the Black+Decker BDERO100 sander is any good for a beginner like me?

Hey @smartmilk, I think you might find this TechReviewer article Overview of the Black+Decker BDERO100 Sander helpful. It gives a comprehensive overview of the BDERO100 and how it stacks up against other sanders.

Hi @turnhail! The BDERO100 is actually quite popular among beginners. It's got a 5-inch sanding pad and operates at a no-load speed of 12,000 OPM. That should be plenty fast for most woodworking tasks.

Yeah, I started with the BDERO100 and it served me well in my early projects. The only downside is that it doesn't have a dust collection feature, so you'll want to be prepared for some messiness.

Thanks for the input, guys! Does anyone know if there's an article or something that compares this sander with other options on the market?

Solution

That's super useful, @DylanOzanich! Thanks for sharing that link. The article says it has a brushed motor, is that good or bad?

@turnhail, it really depends on your needs. Brushed motors are typically more affordable and less efficient than brushless ones, but they're also simpler and can handle heat better. For most hobbyists or light-duty users, a brushed motor like the one in the BDERO100 should be just fine.

I agree with @Icejumper4. I used it for a few months without any problems. Just make sure to sand gently on denser materials to avoid pad damage.

Good advice, @ThrowReallyFarAway99! So is the 2 amp rating sufficient for most tasks? Or should I be looking at something more powerful?

@turnhail, 2 amps should be enough for most woodworking tasks, especially when you're just starting out. You can always upgrade to a more powerful sander later on as your skills and projects grow.

Absolutely right, @smartmilk. It's better to start with something manageable and work your way up.

I appreciate the advice. I think I'll give the BDERO100 a try!

That's great, @turnhail! Good luck with your woodworking journey!
