I've been looking to buy a chainsaw for winter work and was wondering if anyone has experience using one in the cold? I'm thinking of getting the Makita XCU11SM1 but not sure if it will be any good in freezing temperatures.
Cold Weather Chainsaw Use?

I've used my Stihl MS 361 in sub-zero temperatures, and it still did a great job. However, I found that chainsaws do tend to struggle in cold weather, so you might want to check the battery performance of the Makita XCU11SM1. Have you seen this review on TechReviewer? Overview of the Makita XCU11SM1 Chainsaw
That's really useful, thanks! How about the chain brake? Is it effective when the chainsaw gets wet or icy?
The Makita XCU11SM1 has a tool-free chain tensioning system, which is great for adjusting the chain when it gets stretched from cutting through frozen wood. As for the chain brake, I can't say from personal experience, but I think it should work fine in cold weather as long as you maintain and clean the chainsaw properly.
I've used a different Makita chainsaw in the past and found that its brushless motor held up well even in freezing conditions. The battery capacity is crucial here; a higher Ah rating would allow for more extended use in the cold without needing frequent recharges.
I spoke to a friend who owns the Makita XCU11SM1, and he said it works perfectly fine in cold weather. He mentioned that the 4 Ah battery does a good job of lasting longer than expected when cutting wood in freezing conditions. The chain brake seems to work well too; he had an instance where the chain hit a frozen log, and the brake kicked in as expected.
Wow, that's really reassuring to hear! I think I'll go ahead and get the Makita XCU11SM1. Thanks for all the advice, everyone!
Great choice! Just make sure you maintain it properly, and you should have no problems using it in cold weather.
Good luck with your new chainsaw! Let us know how it performs when the temperatures drop.
