Concrete Drilling With This Drill?

Started by Bennettmaster on June 20, 2024

I'm planning to do some concrete drilling this weekend and was wondering if the Black+Decker LDX220C is a good choice for that? Has anyone tried it on concrete?

Thanks for the input, @Genericseat. I found an article that talks about this drill and its performance on different materials including concrete. Check it out if you're interested: Overview of the Black+Decker LDX220C Drill.

Yeah, @Bennettmaster, I've used it on concrete before. It did a decent job but wasn't as effective as when I used it on wood or plastic. The 3/8-inch chuck might be limiting here.

Solution

Oh, nice find! I was reading up on the specs of the LDX220C, and it seems like it might lack the power required for drilling into concrete, especially because of the 3/8-inch chuck size.

I've used this drill on concrete as well. It does struggle a bit compared to using a hammer drill, but it's still usable if you don't need to make deep holes or don't drill too many holes at once. The battery life is also a concern when working with heavier materials like concrete.

@HarlemRobeSpotter makes a good point about the battery life. I've found that having a spare battery on hand really helps, especially for tasks like this where you need to work continuously without interruption.

True, having a spare battery is definitely helpful. I think it also depends on how skilled you are with using power tools. Some people might be able to get better results out of the LDX220C than others.

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone. It seems like this drill could work for smaller concrete projects or for less experienced users, but it might not be the best choice if I need to make deep holes in concrete regularly. I'll probably look into getting a hammer drill if that's the case.
