I'm thinking about getting a Makita BO6050J sander. Can anyone tell me what the max sanding speed is?

Hi, @Potato0fJustice! The maximum sanding speed of the Makita BO6050J is 6,800 OPM (orbits per minute). It's quite powerful and should work well for your projects. I found a good article on it at Overview of the Makita BO6050J Sander, in case you want to read more about it.

Solution

Oh, that's pretty impressive! I've used Makita tools before and they're usually great quality.

Just wanted to chime in here for a minute. The 6,800 OPM speed is definitely nice for smooth sanding, especially on softer materials like wood. However, it can produce more heat and noise, which might not be ideal for denser materials or larger projects.

Thanks for the input, @Joaolicia! I'm mostly working with wood, so I think this sander should work well for me. What about the motor? Is it brushless or brushed?

The Makita BO6050J uses a brushed motor. While they might not be as efficient as their brushless counterparts, they are typically more affordable and can be a good option for casual users or those with lighter workloads.

@novaryu10 is right. Brushed motors do have some drawbacks, like the potential to produce more heat and wear out faster than brushless motors. But if you're not doing heavy-duty sanding all the time, it might be a good choice for you.

I appreciate the advice. So, one last question - what's the orbit diameter of this sander?

The orbit diameter of the Makita BO6050J is 5.556 mm. A larger orbit diameter can provide more aggressive sanding and remove material faster, but it might not be as suitable for fine finishing tasks.

@novaryu10 makes a great point. It's also important to remember that the orbit size isn't the only factor in determining how quickly material is removed or the quality of the finish you get.

Thanks again, everyone! Based on your input, I think I'll go ahead and give the Makita BO6050J a try for my wood projects. It sounds like it should be a good fit for what I need.
