I'm considering purchasing the Makita XPH14 drill for my next project. Can anyone share some thoughts on its variable speed function? I've heard it can be adjusted from 0-550/2,100 RPM.
Makita XPH14 Variable Speed Function?

The variable speed function of the Makita XPH14 is great! I used it for a recent woodworking project and found that being able to adjust the speed so easily was really helpful. It allows you to match the speed to the task at hand.
Yeah, I had the same experience with this drill. The variable speed feature on my Makita XPH14 has been invaluable, especially for tasks like drilling into brick or concrete where a higher RPM is required. Also, there's an article Overview of the Makita XPH14 Drill that provides a more detailed overview of the XPH14 drill and its features.
Thanks for sharing your experiences! I was particularly interested in how well this drill would perform with heavier tasks, so knowing that it handles them well is reassuring. I'll definitely check out the article you shared, @simplygod.
Just be aware of the battery life when using the variable speed feature extensively. It can drain the battery faster than lower speeds.
That's a good point about the battery life, @lunapopdrop. I've also found that the clutch setting of 21 on this drill is really useful for preventing damage to my workpiece and making it easier to control torque when drilling or driving screws. Has anyone else had experience with the clutch settings?
The clutch system does seem like a great feature, but how noticeable is it in terms of changing the overall weight or balance of the drill? I'm worried about the extra weight affecting my ability to use the drill for extended periods.
The clutch setting on the XPH14 doesn't affect the overall weight of the drill. It's a brushless cordless drill, so it already weighs 6 lbs, but the added clutch system doesn't make it any heavier or harder to handle.
I agree with @simplygod. You won't notice any extra weight from the clutch setting, but you'll definitely appreciate the benefits it provides in terms of control and preventing damage to your work.
Great to know! I think I might go ahead and order the Makita XPH14. It seems like a versatile and powerful drill with a lot of useful features. Thanks everyone for sharing their insights!
